The Obligatory New Year Post

Jeremy and I were saying today that in 2020, our lives will look very different from how they look now, just as different, most likely, as our current lives look from our lives in the year 2000. It's nothing revolutionary to say that a lot changes in a decade; of course things will have changed since my high school graduation, although it is still somewhat overwhelming to review so many small events that add up to so much.
I confess that I, unlike many people, as it seems, do not often look back on the year gone by and think about what has transpired. New Year's Eve has never been a really big deal for me, and if anything, it is somewhat frightening to be on the edge of the next year, not knowing anything about what could happen. We can be certain that both very good and very bad things will happen, both in the world and in our lives, and to a large degree we have no control over much of it. I feel lucky to say that the vast majority of what has happened in my life has been wonderful, and lucky is a completely insufficient word to describe my life to this point.
The funny thing about it all is that not too many people out there have unique experiences when it comes to looking back. The details of our lives certainly differ, and while one person may describe 2009 as a great year, another may be sighing in relief at its demise. In the end, though, we all experience the same things: marriage and divorce, birth and death, success and failure, loss and gain. Perhaps this seems like a message of the mundane nature of human existence, or maybe it is more of a musing on the threads that connect us all, but either way, it is strange to think that in our uncertainty of what lies ahead, we can expect a certain degree of predictability.
