I went home to New Hampshire this weekend to help watch my parents' two new puppies (cutest things ever, but that's another topic). One of my favorite things about going home is getting to listen to my favorite radio station, the likes of which I have not been able to find an equivalent ANYWHERE. My dad introduced me to the station when I was in high school, and I loved it immediately. It's based in Boston (and Haverhill), but luckily it extends up to NH too. It's fantastic for a number of reasons:
1. It's independently owned, so it can basically play whatever it wants, not the songs its owner company pays it to play.
2. It plays a serious variety of music. It's mainly alternative/indie, but it reaches into classic rock, jazz, some pop, folk, and tons of other great stuff. For example, as I was listening today, I heard Iggy Pop, Stevie Wonder, and Jack Johnson all in the same hour.
3. It doesn't overplay anything.
4. The DJs are the least cheesy ever.
5. This may be the best reason - It is constantly bringing in new material, and way before other stations,so I am always hearing new songs by new groups I have never heard of. It even has a segment every night at 10pm that plays only local musicians. I believe it was the first station to play John Mayer. I first heard Gomez on this station, with "Get Myself Arrested", and tonight I heard another song of theirs for the first time:
I pretty much binge on the station every time I go home, and on every drive back to Connecticut I get a little sad around Worcester when the static starts to creep in. Luckily, although I rarely take advantage of it, the station streams live online, so anyone anywhere can listen anytime. I highly suggest giving it a try. I will admit that sometimes I try to listen to it and get a block of songs I'm not crazy about, but it overall has a fantastic approach. If you get a chance, listen to "Acoustic after Hours" at night or "Brunch by the River" on Sundays.
